How spine width is calculated
Spine width is simply how thick your stack of interior pages is. For most offset and digital printers it is calculated as page count divided by the paper's PPI (pages per inch). Amazon KDP publishes exact per-page multipliers instead: for example, white paper is pages x 0.002252 inches. Thicker, uncoated stocks build a wider spine than thin gloss stocks at the same page count.
Always confirm the final spine width with your printer before finalizing cover art. Paper batches vary, and a spine that is off by even 1/16" will visibly wrap the cover text around the corner.
Wraparound cover layout
A perfect-bound cover is one single piece of art: back cover + spine + front cover, plus 0.125" bleed on all four outer edges. The template PDF from the calculator above marks the trim lines in cyan and the spine folds in magenta so you can build your cover at exactly the right size.
Saddle-stitched comics have no spine
Standard floppies and ashcans (usually up to about 48 pages) are folded and stapled, so there is no printed spine at all. If that is your format, you just need a front and back cover. Our editor can even export your interior as ready-to-fold booklet sheets.
